The iconic Ravindra Bharathi auditorium, for many decades the cultural hub of Hyderabad and united Andhra Pradesh, will soon fade into history. In its place, the Telangana government plans to construct an ultra-modern structure that will be in tune with “cultural and historical significance” of the city. The government hopes that the new building, when completed and thrown open for use, will become as iconic as the Opera House in Sydney.

The new proposed cultural edifice is planned to be in the shape of a large shiny pearl nestling in its shell. The design of the building is reported to have appealed to chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao as Hyderabad has been traditionally known as the Pearl City, with a thriving pearl market that is about 400 years old.
